Gavin and I have had a good weekend. We were so happy to get a break from
constantly being on the go back and forth between the “Clown House” and the
clinic. We had some down time for Gavin
to play with his new friend Noah. It is
so nice that there is another little boy here for Gavin, and it has been so
nice for me to have another mom from the feeding clinic here to talk to!
Saturday was our first day to figure out our own feeding
schedule. I was going to try to keep the
same schedule they do at the clinic, but it was a little challenging and
exhausting! The feeding clinic sent us
home with some pureed foods…peaches, sweet potatoes, carrots, and applesauce to
mix with them. After our rough afternoon
on Friday, Dr. Clawson mentioned on our way out that if we just stuck to our
trusty yogurt and PediaSure, she would be fine with that! While I did not have the courage or the energy
to try anything that might rock the boat Friday night, I decided that I needed
to push the limits a little on Saturday and see if we could make a breakthrough
together. I have to remember that we have
had so many successful meals. Thankfully,
Monster Gavin does not appear regularly as long as I can try to control as many
outside factors as possible. I am happy
to say that we did very well on three out of the four meals! Gavin was well rested, and he ate a decent
amount of all of the food they prepared for us with very few issues!!! Just to keep things real, our last meal was a
little rough. We were doing so well, but
then in the last four minutes he decided he had had enough. He proceeded to spit at me for most of the
remaining time. I followed Dr. Clawson’s
advice and just ignored him (which killed me to let him get away with that!),
and I just talked about “Bob the Builder,” and commented on stuff around the
room. I stopped the timer to let him
cool down and not end the meal on bad behavior.
Then, when he calmed down, we successfully took one last bite, and one last
drink before the timer went off. I
thought I handled the situation rather well J
Sunday was not as successful. Gavin threw up Saturday night in bed. Not sure what happened, but after a couple of
rough moments he fell back asleep and slept through the night. He woke up and was fine today, but it just
made me a little nervous. Every meal
today was full of him blocking bites, which got progressively worse throughout
the day. Thankfully he did not spit at
me today, so that was good! I did have
to tube him 8oz today, and he will need 6oz in his pump tonight. I’d still say we had a successful weekend overall
with eating. Maybe next weekend we will
have no tubing!!
Today was our 6th wedding anniversary!!! J It was hard on both Eric and I to not be
together today. We are so lucky to have
each other and our sweet little boy. I love
you Eric!!!
We are still amazed at the hospitality and generosity that
we receive here at the Ronald McDonald House.
Volunteers have come in every night to make dinner for us, and on
Saturday, a group came in to make breakfast followed by another to make us
cookies and a third group made us dinner.
I have volunteered in the past, but have rarely been on the receiving
end. I never realized how much the
little things like a meal, a cookie, or simply having a house full of people
can really help brighten someone’s day.
We will definitely be doing everything we can to pay it forward in the
future.
